Great Question!
No, you do not have to attend church to be considered good in God’s eyes. Church can be a great place to come together with people of the same beliefs, and churches can be great for communities, etc. But there are many that will probably attend church often, yet sin and do not do God’s will. To these people Jesus said he will say, “I did not know you.”
But church isn’t for everyone. Some people feel uncomfortable attending church. Others have a hard time attending church due to some illness or problem in their lives. There are many in the Bible that never attended “church,” yet will be given God’s promise and reward.
God cares more about your relationship with Him, and the choices we make in life (ie. following God’s commands). He doesn’t really care how often of even if we attend church. He cares about the nature of our hearts.
Also, consider this: Someone mentioned the verse above about “not forgetting to come together with other believers.” This may be true, but this is the 21st century people. We can do this online now. No need to go to a church, waste gas, or have a big fancy building for us to sing and listen to a 30 minute message, and then leave while the building sits empty all week and homeless people have no where to go.
What is more effective: Going to church and being around the same “believers” week after week. Or doing evangelism, socializing, and communicating online with people from around the world. Millions may potentially be influenced by your relationship with them, etc.
People that say we must go to church, forget the fact that we can now listen to online sermons, join online forums and communities (such as YA!) and more! It is no longer like it was in the old days.
So of course you don’t have to attend church if you don’t feel comfortable. The most imporant thing is to connect to God and other people in a way you feel comfortable doing it!
