Rainbows are such a breathtaking phenomenon to behold. There have been times where I have looked out after a storm, and I have seen a vivid rainbow shimmering in the sky. It doesn’t matter how many times I have seen them, each and every time they leave me breathless. They also make me praise God for His creative beauty, while standing in fear of His wondrous power.
What Does the Bible Say About Rainbows?
The Bible does mention rainbows a few times. One of the most well-known passages, of course, is after the Great Flood. After this dramatic event in history, God said the following:
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
God has promised to never again destroy this entire Earth with a worldwide flood. A rainbow serves as a powerful reminder of God’s promise to never do this again. The Bible also mentions rainbows a few other times:
Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. Revelation 10:1
And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. Revelation 4:3
Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. Ezekiel 1:28
Given the above scriptures, we can only imagine how beautiful those visions must have been.
Double Rainbow Picture: Pictures of a Rainbow I Seen
In the summer of 2010, the first summer my wife and I experienced in our house, a violent storm came. Right before it struck, a smaller storm had rushed through. As the sun peeked through, it created one of the most breathtaking rainbows I have ever witnessed in my entire life. It must have been no further away than the length of 2 football fields. It was a double rainbow, and it was complete from one side to another.
You cannot see the entire rainbow in the picture below because it was so close to us, I couldn’t zoom out enough to capture the whole thing on camera. So I took a shot of one side of it. Here is the picture below:
This was such a wonderful scene, and my wife and I both felt blessed that we were able to see such a wonderful view. The pictures DO NOT do this scene justice. It was so much more impressive in person. The sky was so dark with storm clouds, yet this rainbow had such brilliant colors.
