What does the Bible say we will do in Heaven? Will we work? Will we have jobs in Heaven (or the new earth)? Or will be sitting around on fluffy clouds all day playing harps, in a fuzzy fog of happiness?
The Bible does not offer a lot of details on what will happen once we get to Heaven. It makes it clear that we will have no more pain or tears:
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Jesus compared Heaven to a place of paradise:
And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Jesus also said that we will have the opportunity to have a feast with Abraham:
And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
In the beginning, before the fall and curse of man, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, to dress it and protect it, so man did have responsibilities even before the fall:
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
This activity was not hard or burdensome, for after the fall, we see that labor becomes difficult and tiresome:
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return
God is a creator, and He works. Jesus said:
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Keep in mind, even the angels play music and worship God. The Bible also says that we will help judge the angels (1 Corinthians 6:2). Will Christians work in Heaven? Yes, we will likely have some tasks or responsibilities, however, work will not be difficult or cursed. Any “work” we do would bring a sense of joy and accomplishment, without all of the stress and pain we feel when we work today.
Also, we will have a different body, probably one that will not wear down and get weak and tired.
God even does “work” in creating things. He even rested the seventh day from His “work.” Angels are God’s “messengers.” They carry out all sorts of deeds, commands, and responsibilities for God. Jesus had work to do on this Earth. And I am sure in the new Heaven and Earth, we will all have a form of “work” to do.
I don’t think we will have 9 to 5 jobs, but we will likely have responsibilities. We will probably eat and drink too, since the NT indicates in the book of Revelation that we all drink and eat of fruit. But there will be no death, no sadness, and only happiness and fulfillment like we can never imagine.
Are you going to Heaven? Are you absolutely sure you are saved? Jesus Christ died on the cross so that you may have forgiveness of your sins, and be saved. Will you place your faith and trust in Christ today, and receive His forgiveness?
