The Bible is full of “miracles.” One of the miracles that people often question, or even doubt, is the virgin birth event. People say, “There is no way Mary had a virgin birth.” They usually suspect that Mary and Joseph had premarital sex, and tried to hide it until they were married to prevent persecution or punishment.
So when the hear the story of a Virgin born Jesus, they often think…Yeah Right! Atheists also like to be skeptical about this and point out that all humans must have a mother and a father. But is that really the truth? Was Jesus Really Born of a Virgin? What does the Bible say about the virgin birth?
Was Jesus Really Born of a Virgin?
The Bible, in the Book of Isaiah, long prophesied about a messiah that would be born of a virgin:
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
This was hundreds of years before Christ was born in the flesh on Earth. In the Book of Matthew, the account clearly tells us that Mary was indeed a virgin when she became pregnant with the Lord:
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
The text makes perfectly clear that Joseph was not the father, and that she became pregnant solely by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Is a Virgin Birth Scientifically Possible?
First, God is not bound by science, or the laws of nature. God made the laws of nature. When God Almighty speaks, atoms scramble to do His will.
Nevertheless, skeptics have little reason to reject the story of the virgin birth. Even in nature some species can produce offspring without mating. Years ago a virgin shark conceived a baby, and DNA testing conformed it had no male DNA donated to it:
“The scientists who studied the Virginia and Nebraska sharks said the newly formed pups acquired one set of chromosomes when the mother’s chromosomes split during egg development, then united anew.”
“Virgin birth has been proven in some bony fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, and has been suspected among sharks in the wild.”
So virgin births, while rare, do happen even in nature. It is a scientific fact.
Jesus’ birth was not some naturalistic phenomenon, however. The Bible plainly teaches that God sent His Son to Earth to pay for the sins of the whole world.
Mary did have a virgin birth, and her son’s name was Jesus. Christians have absolutely no basis to reject the account of the virgin birth.
Have you been born again? The Bible teaches that all have sinned and have fallen short of God’s glory. If you have not yet received Christ as your Lord and Savior, today is the day of salvation. I urge you to pray for God to forgive you, and to accept by faith the Lord Jesus Christ. Surrender to Him, and make Him the God of your life.
